Mayfield, Ky.–A Mayfield man was killed in a grain bin accident in Graves County Tuesday morning.

Graves County Sheriff Jon Hayden said the victim is 44-year-old Adolfo Garcia of Mayfield, who is survived by his wife and five children, ages 20, 18, 12 and 5.

The autopsy for Mr. Garcia was to be performed today.

Just after 11 AM, Mayfield and Graves County First Responders were dispatched to a farming operation on Ky Hwy 1710 near the US Hwy 58 East intersection for a reported man trapped in a grain bin.

Crews from the Graves County Rescue Squad, Mayfield Fire Department, Sedalia Fire Department, Graves County Emergency Management, Graves County Sheriff’s deputies, and the Mayfield Graves County Ambulance Service all responded.

The preliminary investigation indicated that an employee of the farming operation had gotten inside of the 80,000 bushel capacity grain bin that was partially full of corn, in an attempt to dislodge a portion of grain that was stuck. A witness and co-worker reported that as that portion of grain dislodged, a large amount of grain collapsed on the victim.

Emergency crews, including several area farmers with semi-trucks, tractors, and offloading equipment arrived to assist in rescue efforts. Several pieces of farm machinery needed in the rescue attempt was escorted through Mayfield by the Mayfield Police Department.

Crews were eventually able to free the victim at approximately 2:43 PM. Graves County Coroner Brad Jones determined that the victim, 44 year old Adolfo Garcia of Mayfield was deceased. An autopsy was being scheduled late this afternoon.

Mr. Adolfo Garcia is survived by his wife and five (5) children, ages 20, 18, 13, 12, and 5.

Hayden said, “All of our first responders offer our sincere condolences to Mr. Garcia’s family.”
