The Henry County High School Speech Team had quite a time in Cookeville, TN over the weekend. Maple Townsend & Joshua Lancaster qualified for the National Speech & Debate Association’s National Tournament over the weekend. The pair placed 3rd overall in Duo Interpretation at the qualifying tournament against teams from across the entire state of Tennessee to earn the spot. They are both freshmen at Grove this year, and their qualification is a rare feat for first year high school competitors. Another team member, HCHS Sophomore Timothy Tyler, placed 4th in Dramatic Interpretation, as well. Which makes him an alternate for nationals. Also placing at the tournament, but not qualifying, were Sophomore Canaan Barrow, who made semifinals in Informative Speaking and Lancaster, who was a semifinalist in Dramatic Interpretation. The NSDA National Tournament will be held June 16-20th in Des Moines. The team is coached by David Weatherly.
