Union City, Tenn.–Addison Carr and Maddie Smith twirled no-hitters as Union City blanked Greenfield 10-0 and 15-0 in a District 14A softball doubleheader Tuesday at Eddlemon-Hawks Field.

Carr recorded nine of 12 outs via strikeout in the opener, while Smith was perfect in the three-inning nightcap with four punchouts.

Kennedi Robinson and Kylie Mayes went 2-for-3 in Game 1 for the Tornadoes, while Marlee Theobald drove in a pair of runs. Clare Atwill scored three times, and Smith crossed the dish twice for Union City.

The Twisters (9-11, 7-1) made the most of six hits in the second game, helped by six Greenfield walks and three Yellowjacket errors.

Smith helped herself with a double, single, three ribbies, and three runs scored. Theobald and Emmaline Qualls also scored three times, while Robinson had two hits and a pair of RBIs.

UC plays at South Fulton on Thursday.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

UC 3, Bradford 2 (8)

Will Ragsdale was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the eighth, forcing home Copeland Chism with the deciding run to give the Tornadoes a non-district win vs. Bradford.

UC is now 14-8 heading into today’s District 14A showdown at league-leading Dresden.

The Twisters outhit Bradford 8-3 Tuesday but left 10 runners on base.

Skyler Hall went 2-for-3 and reached base a third time via a walk. Chism scored two of Union City’s three runs, and Will Ragsdale and Ben Kail had the Tornadoes’ other two RBIs.

Kyler Southerland was impressive with 6 2/3 innings as UC’s starter, giving up just one earned run while fanning seven. Troy Joslin (5-2) recorded four outs in relief – two of those by strikeout – to get credit for the victory.

HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER

UC 5, South Fulton 1

Marcos Landeros recorded a hat trick, and Silverio Acevedo added a goal and two assists as Union City completed a season sweep of South Fulton.

The Tornadoes (6-2-2) scored all five of their goals in the second half after a scoreless first period. UC attempted 21 shots on goal.

Angel Martinez accounted for the Twisters’ other tally, and Gavin Morgan contributed an assist to the winning cause.

Jayce Rogers had six saves in goal for the winners.

HIGH SCHOOL TRACK

UC boys 1st, Lady Tornadoes 4th at USJ

A split Union City squad competed and fared well against top-flight competition in the Rural West Tennessee Championships at USJ.

The Tornadoes took just eight boy athletes and eight girls to the meet, with the remainder of the teams competing at McCracken County.

Still, UC finished first among 21 schools on the boys’ side with 90 total points to runner-up Haywood’s 75. The Tornado girls were fourth in a field of 20 girls’ teams with 59 points.

UT Martin signee Kameron Shade won the 100 and 200 meters, setting a modern-day program record (22.23) in the latter. Keaten Brown claimed first in the shot put, and Adrian Crawford triumphed in the triple jump.

Woodrow McKinnis established a new school mark (4:44.36) in the 1600-meter run. He also was third in the 3200 meters. Malaki Brooks placed third in the 400, and Aiden Reid was second in the shot put.

Crawford was second in the long jump and third in the high jump. Tayshun Gentry came in third in the triple jump.

Two new Union City girls’ program records were set as Nakyah Yarbrough was clocked at 12.87 in the 100 meters, and Blair McKinnis came in at 2:40.10 in the 800.

Katana Bonds won the triple jump and was second in the long jump, while teammate Debrionna Jones was second in the shot and discus.

“It was a really good experience against a quality field for our kids,” UC head coach Wade Maddox said. “I do believe that this meet and the Rotary Relays (Friday) will be great tune-ups for our postseason.

The 46th annual Rotary Relays are set to begin at 4 p.m.
