Cumberland City, Tenn.–The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating an accident which claimed the life of a driver who drove off the docked Cumberland City Ferry this afternoon.
Around 1 p.m., the Stewart County Fire & Rescue announced the Cumberland City Ferry was shut down due to an emergency. They asked motorists to find an alternate route and they requested boaters stay out of the area.
Preliminary reports indicate that the vehicle drove onto the ferry and apparently drove right through the gate on the other end. It then dove into the water, sinking into the Cumberland River.
Fire & Rescue, sheriff’s deputies and other first responders have been on scene and recovered the body of the driver.
