Paris, Tenn.–An interesting twist on March Madness is being played at Lakewood School in Paris.
According to Teacher Danette Jones, part of the school improvement plan at Lakewood is to increase word recognition in K-2. In an effort to support this goal the Early Literacy Team led by Jones and Christie Wimberley, created a K-1 March Madness sight word competition that has taken place this week before spring break.
Using data from ESGI, the 25 most missed words for Kindergarten and 1st grade were placed on basketball goals and placed around the building. Students score goals if they can match their word on a paper basketball to the corresponding goal in the school.
Second grade teachers and students have helped with this activity by counting the basketballs at the end of each day and moving the words to make the activity more challenging. Each morning the leaders of the competition are announced on the Eagle News. On Friday one winner from each grade level will be announced.
