TVA Asks Power Customers To Reduce Consumption During Extreme Cold Snap

tva-power

Very cold temperatures across the region drove the Tennessee Valley Authority’s power demand to approximately 32,040 megawatts this morning. Inside the TVA System Operations Center, skilled operators dispatch generation when demand increases and watch over the power and transmission system to ensure the supply of reliable electricity to your local power company.

In order to maintain a continued supply of power to essential services and to avoid possible interruptions of service, TVA is asking that all electric power consumers VOLUNTARILY reduce their use of electricity as much as possible beginning January 21, 2025 at 1 p.m.
TVA, Paris BPU and Union City Energy Authority are working around the clock to make power available to consumers. Prior to this public request, both entities have turned off all non-essential load within our facilities.
They request that all customers cooperate with this request and to do your part to conserve energy at this critical time. Customers can participate by:
– Postponing the use of electric appliances such as dishwashers, dryers, and cooking equipment
– Reducing the use of electric heat by lowering thermostats below normal levels (at least 2 degrees)
– Turning off non-essential lights, appliances, and other electrical equipment
– Conserving hot water
The request for voluntary reduction is expected to last into Wednesday, January 22. Thank you all for how you will contribute to these efforts. You are appreciated.

Bitter cold temperatures are creating near record high demand for electricity across the Southeast United States. To save money and reduce potential strain on the power grid, the Tennessee Valley Authority is asking customers to lower power consumption, specifically between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 22.

TVA is actively monitoring weather conditions, and the power system remains stable.
Ways to reduce your energy usage
1. Set your thermostat to 65-68 degrees. Each degree you lower your thermostat can save you as much as 3 percent on your monthly energy bill.
2. Postpone use of your clothes dryer, dishwasher and stove/oven during peak times.
3. Turn off non-essential appliances and lights during peak times.
Commercial Business: Turn off any lights and office equipment (or place in sleep mode) when not in use and turn off heating outside of business hours.
