Save-A-Heart Day Set At Grove School

save-a-heart-2017

Paris,, Tenn.–On Thursday, February 27th, E.W. Grove students will be participating in the 12th annual Save-a-Heart Day.  Special sessions will begin at 8 am and continue until 3  pm, with lunch between 11:10-11:50. The day consists of students rotating through the following heart-healthy stations:

  • CPR Certification:  Led by approximately 20 HCMC, Air-Evac, & HCHS volunteers –  Students will be trained by CPR instructors and, upon successful completion, will become CPR-certified (CPR certification cards to be issued later). A large number of HCHS students will be assisting as well.   This is an amazing opportunity for our students, especially considering the high rate of heart disease in Henry County.
  • Heart-Related Emergencies & Distracted Driving:  Led by Air Evac and Jackie Wyatt –  Students will learn about heart attack symptoms and how 9-1-1 and supporting systems work in the event of an emergency. Discussion will also include the high-risk effects of distracted driving, such as cell phone use, texting, music, etc. Weather permitting, students will have the opportunity to view an Air Evac helicopter up close.
  • Teen Pregnancy, STDs, and Abstinence:  Nationally known speaker, Lucas Hurd, will talk to our students about real issues in a fun, appropriate way.  Henry County’s teen pregnancy rate has declined in recent years, and we want that trend to continue. During this session, students will learn about the positive outcomes of practicing abstinence and avoiding STDs.
  • Exercise: Led by karate Master Dinh – Students will practice exercises that can be done easily at home and lead to a heart-healthy body. This is a session packed with positivity.
  • Choices with Vaping, Drugs, and Alcohol: Local police officers, Sgt. David Powell (Henry County Sheriff’s Dept.) and Lt. Josh Frey (Paris Police Dept.) will speak to the students about vaping/drugs/alcohol and their negative effects as well as provide ideas on handling peer pressure.
  • Social Media & Anti-Bullying:  Led by Eric Johnson, STARS Nashville Vice- President of Youth Development – During this session, students will learn about the dangers of social media and the harmful effects of bullying and harassment.
